Alexander Technique lessons in the Des Moines metro and Central Iowa

Work with AmSAT-certified teacher Jay Foote to become more present, reduce unnecessary tension, and discover more natural ways of moving.

01

One-on-one lessons

Lessons are 60 minutes in length and take place by appointment in the East Village of Des Moines.

Each lesson responds to what you bring with you that day. Together, we slow down familiar activities so there is time to notice how thought, attention, and movement are working together—and to experiment with choices that offer more balance, connection, and ease.

What happens in a lesson?

01

Check in

The lesson begins with a check-in about what has been happening in the mind/body with the student sitting in a chair. We talk about what brought you to the Alexander Technique, what has changed recently, and what you noticed in your body in the past week.

02

Explore an activity

The student can choose an activity or an activity will be suggested by the teacher. We slow down to allow more time to become aware of how you initiate, embody, and complete the action. Using this new understanding, the student advances to another activity to apply what was learned.

03

Rest and integrate

The lesson typically ends with the student lying face-up on a massage table while the teacher invites the student to release into connection. We finish with a summary, address questions, and formulate a plan for continuing to cultivate awareness of how we move, think, and feel.

03

Small groups, workshops, and classes

Classes provide general information about the body and how it moves efficiently.

Each workshop is unique to the individual group and its interests. Everyone in the group will have an experience of Alexander Technique principles, and a few individuals may receive a mini-lesson with direct contact and verbal feedback.

Workshops can be shaped for musicians, performers, educators, wellness professionals, workplaces, and community groups across Central Iowa.
